Self-talk.  Hmmm. There are 2 options, right?  Positive or negative.  Over the past couple of months, I've witnessed two great examples of positive self-talk and would like to share these with you.

My first example is from a session at the recent LPGA Amateurs Member Celebration in Las Vegas where guest speaker Debbie O'Connell shared her message of positivity.  She used the Amy Bockerstette and Gary Woodland video where Amy plays the par 3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale with Gary during a PGA Tour event in 2019.  Amy repeated 2 phrases before every shot:  "I've Got This" and "I Can Do This".  These are good mantras for all golfers to use and it was inspiring to watch the video.  Gary Woodland surprises Amy from Special Olympics Arizona 2019 - YouTube

My second example is the recent LPGA Chevron Championship in Houston.  Angel Yin played great golf on her Sunday final round, using positive self-talk repeatedly.  But my favorite was after she hit a great tee shot on regulation hole #18, over water, just

past the pin, setting up for a birdie to win, par to tie, putt.  After hitting that shot, she looked at her caddie and said, "Let's go do something great".
Here's the science if you're interested (from 5 Tips for Staying Positive on The Golf Course

The idea that positive thinking can lead to better outcomes is supported by a growing body of scientific research. Positive thoughts are associated with the release of certain neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are linked to positive emotions and well-being. When these chemicals are released in the brain, they can help to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase motivation and energy levels.  Practice positive self-talk. Develop positive affirmations, phrases, or mantras that you can repeat to yourself as a way of countering negative thoughts. These positive words or phrases can be things like “I am a strong and capable golfer,” “I trust in my abilities,” or “I can handle any challenge that comes my way.”

Visit our Chapter's Facebook page to share your self-talk. Maybe it can help others!
