A Word or Two about Golf Cart Safety

We all know not to drink and drive, and now we know not to text and drive; but once we hop in a golf cart, it may feel like we are on a theme park ride! It’s a beautiful day, we are on a pretty course with friends, laughing and having fun! You just made a great shot - what could be better?

But hold on! This ain’t Disneyland and your golf cart is not an ATV!

Here are a few reminders to keep you and your passenger safe:

    1. Before playing, make a note of the Pro Shop phone number. In the event you run into any problems with the cart or require other assistance, call the Pro Shop.  They will send help.
    2. Before heading out, check the cart; do you know how the brakes work?  Some carts will stop when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal, others will keep moving unless you set the brake.
    3. Take a moment to be sure your cart partner is seated and ready to go before you begin to drive. Slow down on curves and on hills.  Don’t get too far ahead of others in your group.
    4. Be aware that the cart may slide on loose gravel, dirt and even wet grass. This can happen anywhere but pay particular attention when driving up/down hills and uneven terrain.
    5. If your cart is equipped with a parking brake, use it. Be sure the cart has come to a full stop and the brake is set to prevent the cart from inadvertently rolling forward or backward.  Curb the wheels as appropriate.
    6. Be aware of your surroundings; for example, driving into low hanging branches, over uneven terrain and animal holes could damage the cart or cause other problems, do not drive over curbs as tempting as it may be. Be aware that a puddle or standing water may be hiding a bigger muddy hole than expected.
    7. Watch where you are on the course, pay attention to rolling hills as carts can and do tip over; don’t take that hill on an angle, and don’t go up or down a hill that is too steep.  Sometimes it’s better to back track on the fairway to find a safer route.
    8. Watch for the arrowed “Cart” signs directing you to exit and drive safely to the cart path.  Also pay attention to “Cart Path Only” and “90 degree” rules.

After the round, be sure to check the cart, remove all your personal items such as range finder and phone; dispose of the trash before returning the cart.

Remember, have fun, be safe, and everyone will enjoy the round!!
