Chapter News & Announcements
  • Are you interested in playing on the San Antonio Match Play Team when we compete against other regional chapter teams representing Houston, Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Southern Arkansas, Baton Rouge, and Phoenix? Intrigued? Read on for more details.

What is the Lone Star Cup?
The Lone Star Cup is a team match play tournament intended to simulate the Solheim Cup. The tournament is a two-day event scheduled this year for September 25-26th and hosted by the Houston Chapter. The first day is team match play and second day a singles match play.  Each team consists of 12 golfers (and usually 1-2 alternates).  Lone Star Cup is not directly sponsored by LPGA Amateurs national organization as it started years ago as a fun way to get to know our neighboring chapters and have a friendly competition. We typically have 25 or more women interested in being on the team, so we have a match play qualifier to help determine our team.  See below for details of this qualifier.

    How much does it cost?
The Lone Star Cup will be held Saturday-Sunday, September 25th-26th, 2021 at the Golf Club of  Houston.  All candidates need to be available during these dates.  Friday, September 24th is the practice round, Saturday is the team match play, and Sunday is the singles match play. The approximate cost of registration and hotel and food will be about $400-500. However, this could be more or less depending on cost of hotel and how many are in a room. If you are interested in playing in the Lone Star Cup Team, please fill out the form at the end of this post. Also, you will need to mail a $50 check to our chapter's PO Box to secure your spot in the qualifying process. Checks can be made out to LPGA Amateur Golf Association - San Antonio Chapter and sent to PO Box 701176, San Antonio, Texas 78270. If you make the Lone Star Cup Team, your $50 is applied towards the player registration fee for the tournament. If you do not qualify, the $50 is returned to you in full.

How do I qualify for the team?

    1. Once the signup period has closed, the qualifier candidates will be placed into playing pools according to their handicap. The number of pools will be determined by the number of women who sign up, with a goal to balance the number of candidates in each pool.
    2. Each qualifier candidate will need to play 3 (or 4) match play singles matches against the other women in your pool grouping.  You will be awarded 1 point if you win your match, ½ point if you tie, and no points if you lose. Qualifying for the team will be primarily based on the points earned.  All Singles Matches for qualifying should be played between June 1st thru July 31st.  We plan to have the LSC team selected by the first week of August, so we can have several practice rounds with our team during August and September.
    3. Matches may be played at any course that you and your opponent agree upon. The matches and your opponents will be sent out prior to qualifiers starting. It is recommended that the course be “neutral” to both players versus being the home course for one player. Chapter weekend play is a good option for matches since there will be others there to answer possible questions.
    4. If you are new to match play (or even if you are not new but want to brush up), you might want to review match play rules, as they differ from stroke play. Stay tuned for more emails and opportunities to brush up on the rules.
    5. Before each of your singles qualifier matches, please check your handicap index for that day, as it updates on a daily basis. Next, look up your course handicap for the specific course you are playing. Determine if one of you in the pairing will receive strokes for equitable play. You can find this information using the LPGA Amateurs smartphone app, or you can do it on your computer prior to arriving at the course. Please ask Connie or Kara Sagebiel if you are unclear about how to lookup handicaps for you and the course or for how to award/receive strokes for differing handicaps between the players.
    6. Qualifying rounds determine at least 10 of the 12 members of the chapter team. Those women will elect a captain, and the captain, with input from the other players, then picks the final two players.
Please email or text your match results to Connie or Kara Sagebiel as soon as possible after you play your match.

What if I don't make the team?
The nature of competition is winning and losing, but it is also about teamwork. We encourage you to support your chapter team by attending the event and perhaps participating in the fun play held on the same course(s). Also, your $50 down payment will be returned to you in full.

We will continue to post information as it becomes available.
