The event, the brainchild of former Dallas and Fort Worth Chapter Presidents, came about in response to being unable to play in the 2020 Lone Star Cup (LSC). The idea was the teams selected to play in the LSC would compete in a 2-day event playing the same format, Alternate Shot (Foursomes), Best Ball (Four Ball), and Singles. The Fort Worth Chapter was victorious in 2020 and subsequently in 2021 when they hosted. The 2022 event was moved to Spring 2023.
As with any competition there are winners and losers and feelings of joy and feelings of disappointment/frustration. This year, it was decided the event should focus on encouraging more collaboration and camaraderie between the chapters. With that in mind, it was also decided that the newly formed Denton County Chapter should be invited to participate.
On a beautiful sunny morning 52 golfers, members of the North Texas LPGA Amateurs Chapters, Dallas, Denton County and Fort Worth, set out to test their skill through various formats on a course that provides plenty of hurdles. All were up to the task, but some were more successful than others! And it was done in many cases with playing partners just getting to know each other!
The North Texas Shootout was contested on Sunday June 04, 2023, on the Pecan and Blue Bonnet courses at Grapevine Golf Course in Grapevine, TX. What could have turned out to be a weather nightmare as thunderstorms were originally predicted to hit during the round thankfully stayed away. We could not have had better weather for the event arranged and organized by the event directors from the Dallas Chapter, Brenda Stoddard and Fort Worth Chapter, Natasha Hawes.
One of the best things about the event was getting to meet with our local Chapter Development Specialist, Paulette Pilsner, and Julia Arthur, both San Antonio Chapter members, who played but did not compete. Additionally we were also treated to a special visit with Chapter Development Coordinator, Karen Carlson. It was wonderful seeing members who had met only that day hanging out while they waited to find out the winners.
The results were close, requiring use of a scorecard playoff for each place in both flights.
Our winners were:
1st Katelyn McCreight (DAL)/ Margaret Woods (FW) 78/72
2nd Patricia Patterson (DAL)/ Terry Rolan (FW) 80 /72
3rd Maxine Tupou (DAL)/ Michele Salinas (FW) 81 /74
1st Valorie Belcher (FW)/ Sherri Elliott (DEN) 84/73
2nd Sue Steffen (FW)/ Karen Kendrick (DEN) 87/76
3rd Ann Senechal (DAL)/ Joyce Flatt (FW) 88/76

Dallas Chapter President Cindi Haugh's Summary:
"One stroke determined the overall champion! Jane Lee (73) beat Michelle Salazar (74) who had the lead until Hole 17 on Course 1...very close! The trash talking was FIERCE after the awards."

2023 LPGA Amateurs Scramble Open held at the Indian Wells Golf Resort in Indian Wells, CA. close to Palm Springs. If you like to travel and play golf at your destination, you might want to consider this tournament for next year.
Three teams from the Dallas and Fort Worth Chapters entered the tournament.
Texas Party of Fore: Cindy Schroeder, Jeri Phillips, Maribeth Fletcher, Patte Lee
The Fantasticks: Kelly Campbell, Mara Neal, Lee Fryland, Elke Haetzel
NTX Scramblers: Debbie Hatten, Patti Bartholomew, Terry Rolan, Natasha Hawes
Cindy Schroeder (Texas Party of Fore) summed up her impression as follows:
I wanted to do something different. As a scramble there wasn’t pressure like in individual competition, it was just fun. National did a great job first by choosing Indian Wells, which was a joy to play and everyone there was courteous and extremely helpful. Also the banquets and awards presentations were well done. We saw the other teams from time to time and were happy to see more participants from Texas chapters. We had free time after golf to explore local attractions such as taking a ride on the Palm Springs Aerial Tram. Our captain Jeri Phillips added a fun twist to our adventure with a scavenger hunt while the 4 of us were together. It is important to have a good captain of which we did.
Mara Neal (The Fantasticks) commented as follows:
This tournament was relaxing and fun. We had a mixed team from different chapters, even different States. There is no need to qualify, just get a team together, preferably with a handicap range as they use the Modified Ambrose handicapping system. We played two courses and I feel it would be best to play a practice round on both. A team from Ohio has won the last couple of years. It would be nice for a Texas team to end their reign. I heard from a National organizer that tournaments held on the West Coast rarely sell out, but they always have a waiting list for the East Coast locations. The 2022 tournament was held at Lake Geneva, Geneva Wisconsin. The 2021 tournament was held at Pinehurst, North Carolina. The Dominion Republic fielded a team so it was in fact an international tournament.
Prizes were awarded to Low Net and Low Gross in each flight as well as Overall Low Gross and Low Net teams.
Kudos to Jeanne Biggerstaff from LPGA Amateurs Corporate, the TOPS committee, and the Indian Wells golf crew for excellent tournament logistics.
So next year, get your team together and explore a new golf club and meet lots of new interesting players from other Chapters. Click here for more information on all the national LPGA Amateurs events,
