Chapter News & Announcements
  • 2nd Annual Fort Worth Metroplex Chapter - SCRAMBLE CHAMPIONSHIP

If you have never played in this type of an event, this is a low key and fun way to enter the world of competition.  It is one of 2 most common formats played in "for fun" team formats.

SUNDAY MAY 5, 2024      Shotgun start at 08:00AM.

    IRON HORSE GOLF CLUB
6200 Skylark Circle North Richland Hills, TX 76180
    Registration Closes April 28, 2024

    FORMAT: 4-PERSON SCRAMBLE
This is a 4-person scramble using the same
format as the national LPGA Amateurs Scramble Championship.  This is a good opportunity to practice for that event which will be played later in May.  Singles are encouraged to play and beginners are welcome.  We will be happy to help you build a team!  This is a member only event where each team members must have a current handicap.

    WHAT IS A SCRAMBLE?
Each member of a team hits their tee shots, the team chooses the best positioned ball to hit the next shot and pick up the other balls.  The team members who picked up their balls then place their balls within one club-length (but no closer to the hole) of their team's chosen shot.  Every team member hits their next shot from the location of the selected tee shot.  This continues on each shot until the ball is holed.  Every hole of the round is played like this.  In this event 4 drives from each player will be required to be used and designate on your scorecard.

HOW WILL THE TEAM HANDICAP BE DETERMINED?
The team handicap will be determined by adding the course handicap for each player, taking the average of those 4 values and multiplying by 50% then rounding to the nearest whole number.  For example: the course HCP for each player is 10, 20, 25, 16 = 71.  The average 71/4 = 17.75 x 50% = 8.875 or 9 HCP

The team handicap will be determined on Monday April 29, 2024

    COST: $115/per person
Entry fee includes green fee, cart, range balls, lunch.
PRIZES: Awards to 1st & 2nd place team winners

    VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!
Volunteers for this event are also needed.  If you don't want to play but are willing to help with the event (e.g. player check-in, taking photos, on course helper, etc.) please let me know!  We'll buy your meal!

  • Reflections of a President . . . .

I recently played a round of golf with a couple of members who have impressed me with their game improvement over the time they have joined our awesome Chapter three years ago.  One was a true beginner who wanted to see what this golf stuff was all about, since she was a very good tennis player and had that natural athletic ability  The other was a semi-beginner who decided to get back into golf, again with the same tennis skills.  Both of them have been committed to improving their golf skills with lessons, practice, and play.  And they have done an amazing job in their dedication in improving their golf games and have subsequently, become very good golfers who enjoy playing this lifelong game.

This reflection reminded me what a true joy it has been and will continue to be to be on the sidelines watching our members enjoy their golf journeys. So many have improved so much and I am proud of all of them!  Joining LPGA Amateurs is a great step in improving your game due to increased play and opportunities.  And you gain some golfing girlfriends along the way!  What could be better?

    Yee Haw, y'all.

    YOUR President,
    Jeri Phillips

  • The Fort Worth Chapter is better because YOU are in it!

At the conclusion of the 2nd day of the U.S. Women's Open in June, Michael Whan (USGA CEO) greeted Annika Sorenstam and told her "the game is better because you are in it".  I thought that was very sweet and so very true.  Here's another very true statement "The Fort Worth Metroplex Chapter is better because YOU are in it".  Please know that we appreciate each and every one of our members and are thankful they have chosen to direct their golf energy to the LPGA Amateurs organization and especially to our awesome Chapter!  Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
      ❤

    YeeHaw, y'all.

    YOUR President,
    Jeri Phillips

  • Message from your Prez | Self Talk

Self-talk.  Hmmm. There are 2 options, right?  Positive or negative.  Over the past couple of months, I've witnessed two great examples of positive self-talk and would like to share these with you.

My first example is from a session at the recent LPGA Amateurs Member Celebration in Las Vegas where guest speaker Debbie O'Connell shared her message of positivity.  She used the Amy Bockerstette and Gary Woodland video where Amy plays the par 3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale with Gary during a PGA Tour event in 2019.  Amy repeated 2 phrases before every shot:  "I've Got This" and "I Can Do This".  These are good mantras for all golfers to use and it was inspiring to watch the video.  Gary Woodland surprises Amy from Special Olympics Arizona 2019 - YouTube

My second example is the recent LPGA Chevron Championship in Houston.  Angel Yin played great golf on her Sunday final round, using positive self-talk repeatedly.  But my favorite was after she hit a great tee shot on regulation hole #18, over water, just

past the pin, setting up for a birdie to win, par to tie, putt.  After hitting that shot, she looked at her caddie and said, "Let's go do something great".
Here's the science if you're interested (from 5 Tips for Staying Positive on The Golf Course
    www.bigteesgolfworld.com/positive-golf-thoughts/ )

The idea that positive thinking can lead to better outcomes is supported by a growing body of scientific research. Positive thoughts are associated with the release of certain neurotransmitters and hormones in the brain, such as dopamine and serotonin, which are linked to positive emotions and well-being. When these chemicals are released in the brain, they can help to improve mood, reduce stress and anxiety, and increase motivation and energy levels.  Practice positive self-talk. Develop positive affirmations, phrases, or mantras that you can repeat to yourself as a way of countering negative thoughts. These positive words or phrases can be things like “I am a strong and capable golfer,” “I trust in my abilities,” or “I can handle any challenge that comes my way.”

Visit our Chapter's Facebook page to share your self-talk. Maybe it can help others!

  • Kickoff Highlights from our President, Jeri Phillips

CELEBRATION OF THE FORT WORTH METROPLEX CHAPTER FOUNDERS!
Connie Schott, Peggy Johnson, Jan Ray, and Julie Piland

What a great Kickoff Event at Texas Rangers Golf Club on March 4. There were 64 registrations and 32 of those ladies played golf after the event and enjoyed the beautiful weather. We honored our Founders and were so happy that Peggy Johnson, Connie Pollock, Jan Ray, and Julie Piland were willing to be interviewed about the beginnings of our awesome Fort Worth Chapter. The standing ovation they received as they exited the stage was especially heartwarming.

All the Chapter Board and Leadership members shared what is coming in 2023 for our members. Watch the website, monthly newsletter, and the weekly updates to keep up with all the activities PLANNED FOR YOU!

A successful Kickoff Event helps us raise money so that we can benefit and plan some awesome events for our members. There were plenty of opportunities to contribute to our Chapter’s fundraising efforts:
       * Silent Auction of 27 amazing items
       * 10 Raffle items of a large variety of choices
       * 50/50 Pony Up Raffle with 50% of the funds benefitting the LPGA Amateurs Foundation  and 50% of the funds awarded to lucky
winner Sue Steffen. There were also 2 consolation prizes of cowgirl hats filled with lottery scratch-off tickets won by Patte Lee
           and Kelli Kidd.

       * M&M Guess Jar filled with teal and white M&Ms. Natasha Hawes guessed within 30 of the total and won a $25 Texas Rangers Golf
gift card and the jar of M&Ms.

National Sponsor Birdie Balou was there with Sheilagh Wilson offering her merchandise for shopping and purchase. We also offered sales of Chapter Logo Merchandise for the convenience of our attendees. They placed orders at the Kickoff, we will receive all those orders, and then deliver those orders.   This offering saved our attendees shipping costs and provided easy shopping.

The Southern Brunch Buffet was delicious and Sweet Lucy’s fried pies were a yummy dessert.

Thanks so very much to all the volunteers who helped the event run smoothly with their time and attention. And a great big thanks to the Kickoff Committee for all their planning the last 2 months. These ladies - Natasha Hawes, Lynda Duvall, Debbie Schroder, Sofia Maese, Maribeth Fletcher, and Jeri Phillips - deserve a round of applause!

  • Tribute to Kathy Whitworth

Kathy Whitworth, incredible person, and golfer, who passed away on Christmas eve.  For those of us that have met her, played in her tournament, worked with her as part of the VOA LPGA tournament, and other events; it was an honor and a privilege to be her friend.  This article by Art Stricklin as he talked of Kathy with Cathy Harbin, PGA Master Professional & LPGA Golf Professional, is the essence of Kathy. https://golf.com/news/kathy-whitworth-greatness-rooted-more-than-winning/

As you think of Kathy, what was the 1st time that you met her?
For me, Diana Gats, it was in Canton, OH in 2003; when she was at my home and later met with longtime LPGA friend, Rene Powell.
